Radiology imaging systems have made impressive improvements in image quality in recent years, and now bedside exams have reached the same standard thanks to a new generation of portable X-ray imaging systems.

The radiology staff at St. Luke’s Hospital (Chesterfield, Mo.) reports its new CARESTREAM DRX-Revolution Mobile X-ray System captures exceptionally high-quality bedside images that help physicians detect subtle changes, which is essential especially when caring for critically ill and injured patients.

“The DRX-Revolution represents a new generation of portable systems that can match the image quality offered by our room-based X-ray systems. Carestream’s specialized image enhancement software goes a step further by equipping our physicians with the ability to verify tube and line placements and also aids in visualization of a collapsed lung and other critical conditions that are often difficult to detect,” said Reggie Hicks, RT(R), the hospital’s radiology director.

The DRX-Revolution captures 1,500 bedside X-ray exams a month for ICU patients, surgery cases and inpatients at the 493-bed hospital. Carestream’s image enhancement softwarecreates a companion image from the original exposure to reduce the need for multiple X-ray exams. The general radiology department performs 4,500 medical imaging exams a month.

Carestream’s DRX-Revolution is in use around the clock. Technologists use the system for early morning X-ray exams in the ICU, and then the system is used for inpatient exams throughout the hospital and is on call for surgeons and ICU physicians. “Our surgeons request the DRX-Revolution for spine surgeries and other complex procedures because high-resolution images can be available in seconds, which helps reduce the time needed for each procedure and the amount of time patients are under anesthesia,” said Hicks.
