Mortara Instrument, Inc. Announces FDA 510(K) Clearance to Market Its New Surveyor S4 Mobile Monitor Within the United States

Mortara Instrument, Inc. (Mortara), a Milwaukee-based designer, developer and manufacturer of diagnostic cardiology (ECG) and patient monitoring technologies and devices, announced today that its new Surveyor S4 Mobile Monitor has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
(FDA). This revolutionary advance in mobile monitoring marks the company’s latest addition to its Surveyor Central Monitoring System which is being marketed worldwide.

The Surveyor S4 challenges the conventional wisdom of telemetry and proprietary antenna concepts, and embraces the emergence of patient monitoring within today’s larger, more interconnected and expanded WiFi healthcare networks. This innovative mobile monitor represents a significant expansion of the Surveyor patient monitoring platform and underscores Mortara’s commitment to consistently deliver innovative monitoring solutions to our customers.

The Surveyor S4 Mobile Monitor brings convenient features and functionality to the point of care. “Unlike competitive ambulatory monitoring systems, the Surveyor S4 allows customers to use their existing WiFi network for bidirectional communication with the Surveyor Central Station, rather than require the installation of a proprietary antenna network,” said Dr. Justin Mortara, CEO of Mortara. “By doing so, our technology enables a facility to leverage their existing investment and expand monitoring to virtually anywhere within the hospital or clinic without the additional expenditure. This streamlined, WiFi approach typically proves to be 30% to 45% less expensive than installing a dedicated proprietary antenna network in the same space.”

The pioneering Surveyor S4 solution also benefits caregivers and patients with the following advantages:

Clinical Superiority
  • Provides high resolution continuous 12-lead ECG monitoring at the Surveyor Central Station, ideal for patients who require an increased level of cardiac surveillance.
  • Incorporates Mortara’s world-renowned VERITAS Resting ECG Interpretation Algorithm at the Central Station which can lessen the burden on clinicians to perform ECG testing using a traditional electrocardiograph.

Cost Savings
  • Features an innovative design that is less expensive than competitive solutions which require proprietary antenna systems.
  • Utilizes a rechargeable lithium ion battery which reduces cost-per-use and extends runtime versus alkaline batteries.

Complete Coverage
  • The S4 reduces limitations and enables monitoring essentially anywhere within a hospital where WiFi is enabled.
  • Supports a higher patient capacity than competitive systems which allows simplified expansion to cover virtually everywhere within a facility, a key consideration when planning for future growth.
