Biomedical Test Equipment

The market for biomedical test equipment is on the rise, fueled by hospitals’ concerns over device safety and longevity. Test equipment can both ensure the safety of medical equipment and detect malfunctions that could shorten the life of the equipment. Both concerns have put clinical engineering departments at the forefront of hospitals’ push to keep patients safe and keep equipment running longer, driving growth in the test equipment market. Test equipment that can perform checks quickly and accurately is a biomed’s best friend when it comes to saving his facility money and keeping its patients safe.

“Expectations for the quality of care have never been higher,” said Dominic Ivankovich, General Manager at Fluke Biomedical.

The top trends in biomedical test equipment mirror popular trends in other technology. Think of the second-generation iPad’s slogan: “Lighter, thinner, faster.” Just like smart phones, tablet computers and other consumer devices, biomedical test equipment manufacturers are pushing for products that are combination devices, are pocket-sized or handheld and can save users time by performing multiple functions.

Consider Unfors Instruments’ Xi, a handheld mulitparameter test device. With its thin, rectangular design, this test device looks like a high-tech cell phone. The company’s website describes the device as “a complete system for multiparameter measurements on all modalities.” Those modalities include R/F, mammography, dental and CT, with added options for luminance and illuminance measurements of medical monitors, as well as a detector for scatter and leakage radiation measurements.
