Global Industry Analysts (GIA) describes growth in the fluoroscopy and mobile C-arm equipment market as “sedate.” The market researcher cites the mature market and emerging alternatives in radiography as primary hindrances of growth. “Demand for fluoroscopy and mobile C-arms in larger and mature markets such as the U.S. and Europe is projected to grow at a relatively slower pace, with most of the demand in these markets coming from replacement sales to existing clients,” according to GIA’s report on fluoroscopy and mobile C-arms.

C-arms provide a cost-effective alternative to other imaging modalities, so sales remain strong in less developed countries and rural areas, as well as for new applications in surgical settings, during which surgeons often use C-arms to image the inside of the body. “With increasing emphasis on minimally invasive procedures worldwide, the demand for mobile C-arms is expected to increase in future,” according to the report.

According to GIA, “The global market for fluoroscopy and mobile C-arms (excluding mini C-arms) is estimated at 9,403 units in 2011 and is projected to reach 11,486 units by 2017.”

The rising number of bariatric patients has spurred manufacturers to focus on designing systems that can withstand higher patient weight and allow extended distance between the imaging tower and the tabletop. Siemens Medical Solutions’ AXIOM Luminos TF system features a 55-centimeter distance between imaging tower and tabletop and has a weight capacity of 600 pounds in locked position and 500 pounds in moving state.

New imaging applications, such as pain management and imaging of the brain, heart, abdomen and thoracic cavity, rather than just extremities, also drive growth in the market. Newer technology, such as mobile C-arms and C-arms that incorporate flat-panel detectors, are in the highest demand.
