Equipment Tracking Software

I would like to get a poll of what tracking program other biomeds are using at their facility. For some reason this facility is using Maintenance Connection which in my opinion is more set up for building maintenance. Is anyone else using this program?

I have heard good things about Four Rivers. I have been doing some research on maintenace software that will work with the Aeroscout asset tracking software.

If you are in a smaller facility, take a look at ReadyTech by Mainspring

Kelvin,

Mainspring works very well with Aeroscout. We were part of the team that won the HIMSS "Best RTLS Integration" award, along with Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital, Aeroscout, Epic and CareFusion.

Mainspring can also work in parallel with passive RFID for use cases such as telepack loss prevention.  Here is a link to an article in the RFID Journal: http://www.rfidjournal.com/articles/view?11394

Carl,

There are three issues you raised in your question:

1. Is Clinical Engineering (CE/HTM) workflow significantly different to justify purchasing a system that focuses on this workflow - Clinical Equipment Management System rather than a generalized CMMS - Computer Maintenance Management System?

2. What is a rational strategy for interfacing a CE/HTM based system with external systems like RTLS, Accounting, Purchasing, etc.?

3. What is it that is gained from a location system?

-------------Here is EQ2's take on these three vexing questions:

1. Clinical engineering's (HTM) workflow is significantly different to warrant the need for a focused CEMS.  This holds true IF there is interest in going beyond saving and generating a simple open/close percentage on work events.

2.  Standards based workflow is the only reasonable, affordable and safe (keeping one’s job and headaches to a minimum) way to interface between complex systems.  One such standard is HL7.  For the last three years, Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) - Patient Care Device Domain (PCD) has been developing a Location Services standard for healthcare.  What this means is that the location of things becomes a defined service within the infrastructure of a hospital, This information can be access much like the TCP/IP PIng or TraceRT (Trace Route) is a standard for determining if a network location is responding and the route required to get to the network location, respectively.

3.  Since standards take time the secondary solution involves an internal standard approach taken by EQ2.  This is based on the fact that most location systems such as Aeroscout and others have a protocol for transmitting location to other systems.  EQ2 has created a Web service that does for these RTLS protocols what EQ2 did for electrical safety analyzers - standardizes both delivery of information and the enabling of workflow across different manufacturers.  Using this approach enables the hospital to consume from location information without locking themselves into to only one provider.

At this year's AAMI, the big event on the show floor is the AAMI/HIMSS Interoperability Showcase.  This event will showcase the standards messaging work of the IHE and particularly the PCD.  EQ2 will be in the middle of this work demonstrating standards based communication, information transfer and workflow involving direct and real time messaging between RTLS, medical devices and other hospital information systems.

Carl, I invite you and others to come on by and see the future …now.   I will be available to provide you with a guided tour of the many exciting processes that are part of the Showcase.
