As in the subject heading, I took out the battery and then reinserted it, and nothing changed. The power light is on but there is no screen image at all. Is this machine salvageable? What should I try next? Thanks so much

It could be a couple of things, I would check out the internal power supply first, then move on to the display and the cabling between that and the main board.
