Heating of centrifuge rotor

We have a Hettich Universal 320 centifuge. When we use the rotor 1615 at 10000 rpm the rotor and probes heat very much.

What is wrong with our centrifuge?

Did you ever get this issue resolved?  If so, what steps did you take?

Hello chlevca,

The 1615 rotor in an air-cooled centrfiuge such as the Universal 320 has an expected temperature rise at the sample level of +14C in one hour of running at full speed (12000 RPM) I have no information for the 10000 RPM speed you cited, but I would guess it would be up near there. In a properly set-up centrifuge, aIr friction is the number one reason for the heat rise, plus a little motor heat.

Temperature rise depends on factors such as ambient air temperature, whether the centrifuge has the required 300 mm spacing for safety and ventilation all around it (per the manual) and if the transport bolts have been removed from the underside of the centrifuge (3 x 5mm bolts with black spacers, highlighted by red plastic points)

If temperature control is critical to your samples, you may want to consider a temperature-controlled unit, such as the Universal 320R.
