Imaging x-ray

Can a 14" x 17" Image receptor be placed in the bed under the mattress. We do not want to lift the infant who may be in critical condition

There are a lot of un-knowns for us out here. Are there springs or other metal objects in the mattress? Do you have space under the mattress to fit the detector? What type of receptor is it? Can it handle the weight (most likely yes) ? If it is digital and you can use AEC you should be able to take the shot and get a decent image as long as no metal is in the way. Best wishes.

To find out some of those unknowns I would do some tests. Take a chest phantom and put it on the bed and do the test. If you don't have a chest phantom try a 5 gallon water bottle with your favorite resolution phantom sitting under it. This should give you, and the x-ray tech's, enough data to determine feasibility.

Rad-man and John have good advice you need to check, however if you do use AEC you need to take a couple of test exposures and check the dose while also insuring the AEC does not time out. If the bed is plastic or fiberglass this should not be a problem but the test image will show (both physically on the image and machine timer)whether or not the AEC receptor is blocked by an object and / or where you need to place the receptor. All these checks along with the advice from Rad-man and John should only take you a few minutes. Good Luck!

Good advice given....if the mattress is simply foam the HVL level won't be affected much but will raise the patient dose somewhat. The only way to know is to give it a try!
