Double red cell donations have been an important advancement in blood collection. About 40 million units of red cells are transfused to patients each year. These red cells are frequently in short supply and can lead to the delay of necessary surgeries. Collecting twice as many units of red cells can help increase the blood supply in contrast to a manual blood donation, which allows a blood donor to give only one unit of red cells.
