Welch Allyn Launches Flexible Bedside Monitoring Solution in Markets Outside the United States and Canada
2010-11-17 Intuitive Features and Large LCD Display Enhance Clinical Decision-Making, Improve Patient Safety Welch Allyn, a leading global provider of medical diagnostic equipment, today launched the company’s first comprehensive bedside monitoring solution at Medica 2010 World Forum for Medicine International Trade Fair with Congress as it introduced the Welch Allyn 1500 Patient Monitor. Designed to enhance clinical decision making and improve patient safety, the 1500 Patient Monitor offers a comprehensive, intuitive monitoring solution with easy-to-use features and options that provide clinicians with the information they need to provide the best possible patient care. From the company that developed the rugged and dependable Propaq® patient monitors comes the latest in bedside monitoring solutions, optimal for multiple environments throughout the hospital including the emergency and cardiology departments, step-down units and for procedures such as endoscopy. One of the outstanding features of the 1500 Patient Monitor is a 15-inch color LCD display—the largest in its class—with a 170 degree vertical and horizontal viewing angle that allows clinicians to see patient data clearly from anywhere in the hospital room. Additionally, its compact size, including a footprint that is only three-inches deep, means it can be placed almost anywhere without disruption. “The 1500 Patient Monitor gives us more depth in our range of quality monitoring products,” said Grant Gibson, international category director, Patient Monitoring at Welch Allyn. “Customers have long been pleased with our transport and wireless monitoring solutions, but there was a need for a bedside monitoring system as a key component to our flexible monitoring solutions. The 1500 Patient Monitor fills that need with a comprehensive monitoring solution that provides simple, easy-to-interpret patient data that is visible and accurately interpreted right at the bedside—or from anywhere in the hospital room.” Vital Signs Parameters The 1500 Patient Monitor offers higher-acuity patient parameters that provide everything a busy healthcare professional needs to facilitate the best possible patient care and safety. These include a 12-lead ECG capability with the option to add diagnostic interpretations, Mortara® arrhythmia and ST segment analysis on the device, Nellcor® SpO2, and Oridion® Microstream® capnography technology. Also included are temperature, heart and pulse rate, respiration (including apnea monitoring), two invasive blood pressure lines, and a noninvasive blood pressure line compatible with Welch Allyn FlexiPort® cuff technology. Masimo® Rainbow™ SET SpO2 will be available in early 2011. 1500 Patient Monitor Features In addition to the large display, the 1500 Patient Monitor offers large font numerics and graphics on an antiglare screen for greater visibility in any lighting conditions. Its modern design includes color-coded alarm indicators on the front panel for improved patient safety and nine direct-access keys located on the front panel for time savings and ease of use. Labels containing symbols instead of words offer quick recognition of functions for reduced errors and improved patient safety, and up to six waveforms offer optional visibility of complete patient data. Twenty-four hour trending with a one-minute sampling rate offers precise data analysis, and an integrated 80 mm thermal printer allows the convenience of data capture at the device. The 1500 Patient Monitor supports three operating modes—adult, pediatric and neonate—offering the flexibility to use one monitor safely on all patients in all areas of the hospital. The monitor includes the standard Welch Allyn interface, which allows for ease of training and set-up. Hardware and software updates are easily performed through a USB port. In addition, there is no integrated fan—keeping noise and maintenance to a minimum and enhancing infection control—and a direct power supply eliminates the need for an external power adaptor. For customers wishing to operate on battery power, a lithium-ion battery provides a low toxicity solution with long operation mode and short recharging time. “The initial reaction to the 1500 Patient Monitor launch at Medica has been very positive. Customers are intrigued by a device that boasts a large screen and so many outstanding features in such a contemporary design. They are delighted to see Welch Allyn offer a flexible solution that is optimal for a wide range of environments hospital-wide,” said Gibson. “Customers have long known Welch Allyn for the time-tested and reliable features of our Propaq monitoring devices. Today, they are going to remember us for enhancing clinical decision making and improving patient safety at the bedside with the Welch Allyn 1500 Patient Monitor.” The device is expected to be released in the United States and Canada in early 2011, pending 510k market clearance. Connectivity to the Acuity® Central Station monitoring system is also expected to be available in early 2011.
