An electrocardiograph is used in the detection of heart related abnormalities. It measures the electric potential on the body’s surface, providing an idea of the electrical currents associated with the heart muscle activity. Often referred to as an ECG or EKG, these test and equipment are extremely valuable in the healthcare setting. Regular and thorough preventative maintenance should be preformed, being sure to inspect all aspects of the equipment, accessories and attachments. Here are a few tips to include in your preventative maintenance routine:

  • Inspect the outside of the unit for cleanliness and signs of abuse
  • Examine all electrical plugs and cords for damage, including a check of the plug’s blades and any fraying of the cord.
  • If the device has a switch-type circuit breaker, check that it moves freely. If an external fuse protects the device, check its value and type against that marked on the chassis and ensure that a spare is provided.
  • Evaluate all electrodes, cables and any other related hardware for signs of damage, and to ensure they are firmly connected.
  • Examine all paddles and probes for signs of wear and cleanliness.
  • Make sure all paddles and probes are labeled correctly.
  • Examine all controls and switches for physical condition, secure mounting, and correct motion.
  • Make sure all control knobs are secure, and all switches work properly
  • Inspect all batteries and connectors, making sure the battery is capable of holding a charge.
  • Inspect the operation of all lights and alarms.
  • If applicable, use a simulator to ensure the equipment is working properly, and verify the operation of any self-testing or calibration systems.
