Pioneer Printer Creates 3D Holograms from Ultrasound of Unborn Babies (w/video)

Although we have seen 3D printed models of unborn fetuses before, Pioneer is showing off a technique to create 3D holograms of the unborn babies’ faces. DigInfo TV is reporting from the 2013 OPTICS & PHOTONICS International Exhibition in Japan that Pioneer is utilizing a compact, full-color printer that uses stereo hologram technology for the creation of realistic three dimensional images.

One of the main innovations of the system is that it does not require a complex photographical environment previously necessary for the creation of such holograms, nor the accompanying knowledge and devices. Instead, it can use computer-generated 3D models to construct the hologram data, and ultrasound data, especially of unborn babies, make for an attractive source of this.

The printer can record a full color card-sized Lippmann hologram in 120 minutes with one color holograms taking 90 minutes. Unfortunately, the technique is still a research and development project not planned to be available to consumers anytime soon.
