For the fourth consecutive year, employees of Welch Allyn, a leading medical diagnostic device company that specializes in helping clinicians improve patient outcomes, spent a day giving back to their local community as part of the company’s annual “A Show of Hands” volunteer campaign. On Friday, July 19, over 500 employees helped out at more than 20 not-for-profit organizations in Onondaga and Cayuga Counties and at the company headquarters. This year, Welch Allyn expanded its “A Show of Hands” event to two days, incorporating the first annual Welch Allyn 5k and Family Fun Run/Walk at the company’s headquarters the following day on Saturday, July 20. One hundred percent of the registration fees for the race will go directly to Clear Path for Veterans, a local not-for-profit organization that empowers military members, veterans and their families in the transition back into a civilian lifestyle through traditional and nontraditional wellness-enhancing programs.
“Welch Allyn employees truly stepped up today and helped their neighbors throughout Onondaga and Cayuga Counties,” said David Allyn, director of corporate social responsibility at Welch Allyn. “Some of our folks traveled to Cayuga-Seneca Community Action Agency, where they helped with landscaping, painting and even entertaining kids in the day care program. Some went to Exodus 3 Ministries and helped set up for their BBQ fundraiser . And others went to the Syracuse VA Medical Center where they held an ice cream social for the veterans—just to name a few of the ways we gave back today. And we are very excited about extending our campaign to include our first annual 5k and Family Fun Run/Walk that will benefit Clear Path for Veterans.”
The “A Show of Hands” volunteer initiative is part of the company’s annual Beacon of Quality event, a designated date when local facilities are closed for the day to honor employees. The morning session included business updates and an award ceremony which recognized exceptional employees with the Customer Fanatic award—the highest Welch Allyn recognition award that recognizes a person or team who has gone above and beyond the normal call of duty to put the customer first. Employees then visited local organizations to lend a hand with various tasks and some were stationed at the company’s headquarters assembling school kits for local elementary schools, emergency personal care kits for Heart to Heart International, mailings for the Rescue Mission and writing letters to soldiers to include in military care kits as part of Operation Gratitude.
“We had such a great response from employees the past three years that we decided to continue our ‘A Show of Hands’ initiative, make it an annual event and then expand it to involve community members as well,” added Allyn. “People have always looked forward to the annual Beacon of Quality event—even before we started volunteering, but for the past few years I have heard our employees talking about wanting to do more. These are our neighbors we’re reaching out to, so this level of involvement is really an investment in the communities where our local employees work, live and play.”
Several Welch Allyn business partners joined employees again this year to help with the volunteer efforts including: Cardinal Health; Henry Schein; Staples, who donated some of the supplies used in the elementary school kits; McKesson Corporation; Marietta Corporation, a hotel amenities company who supplied the soap and shampoo for the emergency personal care kits; Heart to Heart International; and members of the Independent Medical Co-op, Inc. (IMCO).
