In today’s edition of the MedWrench blog I wanted to touch on the subject of medical apps and the ever increasing number of them available at your disposal.  When most people think about using their phone or tablet, they undoubtedly think of downloading applications designed for gaming, productivity or social purposes. However, there are an ever increasing number of medical based applications available at your disposal now days.

There are now a combination of smart devices and apps, often referred to as eHealth or m health, that are being used to make monitoring patient conditions easier. This app-centered monitoring/reporting attempts to keep the process convenient for the patient while simultaneously making it easy for the medical professional to manage.

Some of the applications are more targeted towards the patients while others are specifically meant for the medical professional. One new application from BC Children’s Hospital and the University of British Columbia measures respiratory rates to help detect pneumonia in children. On the other hand, another application, along with an ultrasound probe, is being perfected to provide you an ultrasound screening.

With the speed at which technology continues to grow, I believe there will come a time when all doctors and patients are using their smart devices for medical based purposes. Smart devices will become more than just utensils for social networking and gaming.
