This week on the MedWrench Ask the Expert series we're giving you an inside look at what it takes to get hired in the HTM field. We went directly to the experts of Sodexo to ask them about the industry standards, what will make you stand out amongst your peers and how to get you hired.

1. What are the basic qualifications you look for when hiring in the HTM field?

Skills:

  • Generally - Strong customer service competency, passion for what he/she does and provides a high level of service; above averaage communication skills, both written and verbal; troubleshooting and repair competency. 
  • Managment Roles - Budget management skills/experience; organziation ability; staff development; contracts knowledge; staff management capability.
  • Directors - Positive P&L and contract management; ability to add on business and cross sell services; understanding of regulatory requirements and capable of managing equipment plans and related needs; committed to professional development and current on issues, developing HTM issues, and trends.

Education:

  • BMETs - associates degree or Biomed Technology training in military or other venues. 
  • Project Manager, Supervisor, Director or Manager - bachelor's degree in a related field (preferred), work experience can be counted toward education.

2. What would give a candidate an edge for an HTM position?

  • Proven capability/track record on high level client service
  • Solution oriented
  • Great communication and follow through
  • Hunger for continuous learning/growth and the ability to continually add value to the organization
  • Dedication to get things done right the first time
  • Passion and dedication for staff development

3. What certifications are you looking for and how important are they?

  • CBET
  • CHTM
  • CHFM
  • CE

It puts one ahead if they're a great performer; Demonstrates drive and commitment to the profession.

4. Is it possible to enter this field without a degree?

Yes - experience is weighted.

5. What types of positions do you most commonly have available for HTM?

  • BMET - 3 levels
  • Field Service Engineers - 3 levels
  • Managers, Directors, District Managers, Supervisors
  • PMs
  • IT Managers and Directors
  • Buyers, Purchasing Roles, Accounting and Finance
  • Imaging Service Engineers
  • Informatics Roles

6. What cities hire the most biomed and HTM professionals at Sodexo?

Los Angeles, Houston, Ohama, Boston, New York City, Philadelphia.

7. Do you look for volunteer work when hiring?

Not necessarilly, but it can show strength of fiber of the individual.

8. Where do you do most of your recruiting?

  • Professional organizations - such as AAMI
  • Events - like MD Expo, NESCE and other events
  • Related college and military training programs
  • Job Boards - like Indeed, Monster, Career Builder, LinkedIn, etc.

9. What are the resume do's and don'ts for HTM professionals?

  • Keep it simple, clean and succinct. No typos or misspelling. Clear, readable font with good spacing. 
  • Use your city/state, e-mail and phone number, but you shouldn't use your full address until you are hired.
  • Put the most important things on and omit anything that is not relevant.
  • Highlight companies, roles and designations, schools and relevant degrees.
  • Always include dates of employment.
  • Try to keep it a maximum of 2 pages.

10. What advice do you have for someone entering this field, looking to get hired?

Get as much hands on experience as earily in your career as possible. Be willing to give it your all ,and do extra reading and work to understnad things to get ahead. Be flexible and open to extra hours and projects. Be positive and solution oriented. Hone your communication and relationship building skills. Be committed to great customer service and follow through.
