You sent in an excellent resume and the recruiter from XYZ hospital gives you a call…..now what?  As a hiring director in the HTM career field, Tony Cody has an opportunity to work with many internal recruiters as they weigh and measure perspective candidates.  Below are a few of the top questions they may ask and my thoughts on how you should approach your answer. To read the original article on Resume Tips from the Perspective of a Hiring Manager, go here.

  • Are you still interested in the job?   The answer should be an enthusiastic, YES!  Please don’t play games to increase your leverage.  It usually doesn’t work.
  • Here are the (3–4) key requirements for this job. Can you confirm—with specific details—that you meet these requirements?  Please answer as concise and clear as you can.  The recruiter may not be familiar with your exact job so explain clearly and don’t try to speak above their head.  Even if your skill does not directly meet the requirements, explain how training or related skills could help you get caught up to speed quickly.
  • Describe your ideal working situation (work environment, hours, travel, and the like).  Research the job expectations so that you have an idea of what the work environment would be.  You probably would not be applying if it did not fit your desires.  If all else fails, talk about working with a collaborative team structure.
  • What is your availability for an interview in the next week to 10 days?  Try to work around your schedule but be loyal to your present employer.  The recruiter will respect your professional courtesy.
  • What questions can I answer for you?  Again, do your research.  By asking a relevant question about the company or hospital, you show you are interested in working for them

Remember, always be honest but tactful.  Never bash your former current/former employer.  It just makes you appear disgruntled.  Hope this helps!
