NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Baxter International Inc. (NYSE:BAX), a global leader in advancing surgical innovation, revealed its Peri-Strips Dry with Veritas (PSDV) Circular Staple Line Reinforcement with Secure Grip technology, the latest evolution in a product portfolio that has more than 20 years of proven clinical use in surgical buttressing and soft tissue repair. PSDV Circular is being showcased alongside the company’s comprehensive Advanced Surgery portfolio at the 2018 American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Society (ASMBS) – Obesity Week meeting this week.

“Our latest advancements with Peri-Strips Dry with Veritas demonstrate how we are using customer-inspired innovation from our trusted products to promote better healing, particularly as the number of bariatric procedures being performed is rising,” said Wil Boren, president of Baxter’s Advanced Surgery business.

PSDV Circular, with the included cartridge cone, is designed to allow a circular surgical stapler to advance across the incision site with minimal tissue injury while protecting the buttress. PSDV Circular also features Baxter’s Secure Grip technology, which provides secure placement of PSDV onto a circular surgical stapler. PSDV Circular is easy-to-load through a peel-and-stick configuration and can be used in a range of surgical procedures.

During bariatric procedures, surgeons use a variety of techniques to reduce the risk of significant complications such as staple line leaks and bleeds. To reduce this risk, many surgeons choose to buttress, or reinforce, the staple line with biologic buttressing patches like Baxter’s PSDV Circular product.

“I have been using Peri-Strips Dry with Veritas for many years to reinforce the staple line in my patients, and I’m excited to have this new version that will work with circular staplers now. It’s going to make it easier for me to buttress at the staple line, which I believe is important for my patients to improve outcomes after their operations,” said Eric S. Hungness, M.D., a general and bariatric surgeon at Northwestern Medical Group in Chicago, Ill.

Baxter is also showcasing during ASMBS - Obesity Week the company’s new Tisseel Prima next-generation syringe that makes it easier to control the application of the fibrin sealant along the staple line. Additionally, the company is launching a new longer rigid applicator for Tisseel that will be especially helpful during laparoscopic procedures, including bariatric procedures, where a surgeon requires greater length to apply Tisseel to bleeding sites that are difficult to reach.

Attendees can visit booth #918 to see demonstrations of these new products, as well as the rest of Baxter’s portfolio that can help surgeons during bariatric procedures.
