One of the eye-opening things I experienced as a leader in the HTM community is how it can feel like walking a tight rope. If I do one thing a bit too much or I compensate by swinging to far the opposite direction, I fall to my proverbial doom. Below I listed a few examples of the polar opposites and the balance I found.
- Micromanaging VS Too Hands Off – Balance equals Empowering
- Friends VS Fraternization – Balance equal Connecting
- Cheerleading VS Rigidity – Balance equals Accountability w/Understanding
It is vital to find the right balance as swinging too one direction or another can lead to failure. It is important to empower your technicians while giving them the resources and support they need. As a leader you must connect with your front-line contributors, but you must set boundaries. Holding your technicians accountable is essential and difficult at times. Remember that there are times when everyone makes poor decisions and it shouldn’t have to be condemning.
With a bit of practice and determination you can find out the balance you need to set for your team. Hope this helps!
