Why is it vital to perform preventative maintenance on ventilators?
It is vital to perform preventative maintenance on ventilators because a ventilator supplies a patient with oxygen when they are unable to breathe on their own. If the equipment is not properly maintained, it could lead to more costly repairs and more importantly, it could affect a patient’s ability to breathe.
Can you describe briefly the basic steps one should follow when performing preventative maintenance?
Below are the basic steps one should follow when performing preventative maintenance on a ventilator:
- Perform a visual inspection and ensure there is no physical damages.
- Clean and sanitize the unit.
- Check all air and oxygen filters and make sure they are clean.
- Check for any electrical damage, ground, etc.
- Connect the simulator and allow it to run according to the manufacturer’s recommended settings.
- Change any components per the manufacturer’s recommendation.

There are numerous aspects of the preventative maintenance process that can help prevent healthcare-acquired infections. Cleaning, sanitation and changing filters are all parts of the PM procedure that can help to prevent infections.
How does proper preventative maintenance deliver cost savings for the health care facility?
Proper preventative maintenance can certainly provide cost savings for health care facilities. When a ventilator is poorly maintained, problems go unnoticed and worsen over time, making it more costly to repair. Therefore, it is actually more cost effective to spend the money on regularly scheduled preventative maintenance rather than wait for a problem to arise.
How have new features and new technology changed the maintenance of ventilators?
Ventilators have evolved a lot over the years, and it is our job to make sure we are keeping up with all the new features and technology in order to effectively perform maintenance and repairs. Precisely controlled new technology, such as updating software technology, has helped us detect unpredicted problems early, saving both us and our customers time and money.
