Unconscious bias in professional environments is a significant issue and the HTM career field is not an exception.  Our prejudices are ingrained in us by every experience of our life.  It may manifest internally in the HTM department or it may even be demonstrated by the customers we serve. Whether prejudice is ageism, sexism, racism, or some other bias, it is important to overcome bias and preconceptions in today’s diverse and inclusive environment.  Below are steps to overcoming bias in the HTM workplace:

  • Don’t be in denial – Please remember that everyone has bias.
  • Go back to the facts – When you analyze a decision or reaction, remove the bias variables and reexamine.
  • Never be afraid to ask a second opinion – If you are unsure if you are making a biased decision, bounce the facts off another that you trust. (Be sure to remove all unnecessary variables to protect confidentiality when appropriate)
  • Manage up – Always speak well of your employees and coworkers (especially to customers).
  • Improve our Image – It wasn’t long ago that HTM employees were considered maintenance employees.  HTM has evolved to so much more.  Get the word out on the value we offer and the incredible technology we work with every day.

The professional environment has no place for any form of prejudice, yet it would be unrealistic for anyone to assume it isn’t present.  The most important thing is to realize that unconscious bias is present and to take steps to mitigate its effect.  Everyone deserves to be treated equally.
