AAMI’s Technology Management Council (TMC) is seeking specific examples of HTM initiatives that have enhanced patient safety, reduced costs, and/or improved hospital processes. The TMC will choose six departments to be profiled in AAMI’s publications throughout 2022. Each article focuses on the actions or processes HTM departments have implemented to tackle a specific problem or improve patient care.

In addition, one of the six profiled departments will be selected to receive an excellence award at the AAMI Exchange 2023, June 16-19, Long Beach, CA.

This year, The University of Vermont Technical Services Partnership (TSP-UVM) was honored as 2020’s winning Bright Idea during the AAMI eXchange REWIRED (held virtually, June 7-11, 2021).

The University of Vermont launched the program to address the global shortage of HTM professionals while promoting engagement with individuals from diverse backgrounds. It achieves this by creating biomedical engineering training opportunities specifically for international students.

As of 2020, the TSP-UVM Global Internship Program has trained 47 international HTM students over 14 years. The program has hosted students from Columbia, Trinidad, Tobago, China, India, Spain, Argentina, the Dominican Republic, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

When program lead Michael Lane, MBA, CHTM, CMQOE, learned that his department would receive the 2020 Bright Ideas Award, he was in disbelief. “I mean, after the crazy year we’d been through, it was a very pleasant surprise and very unexpected.”

Lane informed his team—BMETs, biomed service supervisors, and clinical engineers, in addition to the interns—about the good news in a closing message during 2021’s HTM Week, while also sharing “kudos” from clients, students, and UVM colleagues.

“Your dedication to ensuring the hospital and staff are supported and able to provide high quality care to our patients is recognized and appreciated,” wrote one such well-wisher. “You all ROCK!!!” added another.
