The AAMI eXchange conference is coming up from June 16 to 19th in Long Beach, CA, and I cannot wait to see everyone in person. We have often gotten feedback that the AAMI eXchange programming is more geared for Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) and clinical engineers and less for the technicians.

We heard you and want to ensure the eXchange is geared toward EVERYONE in the field regardless of job title or experience in the industry. To that end, for the first time, the AAMI eXchange will offer Technical Training specifically geared towards Biomedical Equipment Technicians (BMETs), students, and anyone in your organization who does technical work. The technical training is happening concurrently with the eXchange conference from Friday through Monday. However, you do not need a full conference registration to take any of these courses. You can register for one training course or multiple throughout the weekend, and classes range from $30-$75 (cost depends on the length of the class). Registration for any of the technical classes on Saturday and Sunday also comes with a complementary expo pass so course attendees can stay and explore the vendor floor.

Given the current economic situation and realizing budget constraints many organizations are facing, AAMI sought to offer this as an inexpensive option for BMETs to receive training. We also recognize that it is impossible to send everyone in your HTM department to the eXchange at once. That’s why these training options give health delivery organizations the option to send staff for a few hours at a time, so more people can take part.  The goal is to provide more flexibility in terms of costs, time, and staff distribution.

AAMI is offering seven different classes throughout the weekend and registration for each course is à la carte. Topics include:

  • Virtual-reality-enabled training for portable X-Ray devices
  • Metrology
  • Defibrillators
  • X-Ray Tube Handling
  • Diagnostic ultrasound
  • Picture archiving and communication systems (PACS)
  • Contrast injectors

AAMI chose to focus on these training areas since we know the field is looking to train and develop less senior BMETs as quickly as possible. After all, AAMI’s own 2021 demographic survey revealed that nearly half the current HTM workforce is approaching retirement within the next ten years. Our younger BMETs need to be ready to fill a vacuum of talent and decades of knowledge alike!

These courses allow BMETs to expand their training portfolio and build their resume, while giving employers the ability to cross-train and succession plan. The courses are also an inexpensive way to earn CEUs for those who need them for recertification.

I hope to see you in Long Beach!
