IMPORTANT REGULATORY NOTICE:

The EPA-4100 External Pacemaker Analyzer is currently the subject of a pending 510(k) premarket notification and is not available for commercial distribution or sale in the United States. Technical specifications and features described herein reflect engineering design targets and remain subject to final FDA clearance.

Q: Lucio, BC Group is developing the new EPA-4100 External Pacemaker Analyzer. What was the core engineering objective behind this new instrument?

Lucio Simoni: Our primary objective was to engineer a modern, comprehensive analyzer capable of addressing the technical requirements of today’s cardiac pacing equipment while optimizing the bench workflow for HTM and BMET professionals. Pacemaker testing requires precise measurement across a wide range of devices, from transcutaneous and transthoracic to temporary transvenous and dual-chamber non-invasive models. We designed the EPA-4100 as a dedicated, highly portable platform built to support these varied applications with high measurement fidelity.

Q: Looking at the user experience, what features did the engineering team incorporate into the EPA-4100's bench workflow?

Lucio Simoni: A primary design focus was the user interface. We integrated a color touchscreen GUI designed to make navigating test sequences straightforward and reduce the need to drill down through nested submenus during routine testing. The instrument is designed to display essential pulse output measurements in real time, including amplitude (mA and V), rate, pulse width, and energy.

Additionally, we engineered internal loads configurable from 50 to 1,550 Ohms in 50-Ohm increments, alongside built-in 5-lead ECG simulation. Integrating these functions directly into the chassis minimizes the need for external accessories on the bench and streamlines the testing sequence.

Q: Pacemaker testing involves critical performance and safety parameters. What specific testing modes and measurements does the EPA-4100 platform support?

Lucio Simoni: It is designed as a multi-function platform. The system supports single- and dual-channel testing across Demand and Asynchronous modes, Refractory Period testing, Demand Sensitivity Amplitude testing, and Line Frequency / Noise Immunity evaluations. It also includes electrical safety testing parameters, such as DC Leakage and DC Load Current measurements, to provide consistent, repeatable data across standard preventive maintenance and extended analytical runs.

Q: Field mobility and data connectivity are major priorities for clinical engineering teams. How does the EPA-4100 integrate into connected workflows?

Lucio Simoni: Field portability was a foundational requirement. The EPA-4100 features a built-in rechargeable battery for mobile operation, along with a standard USB-C port for power management and wired data transfer.

For digital documentation, the analyzer includes Bluetooth connectivity to interface directly with our myBC Mobile and myBC Connect software applications. This setup allows technicians to capture measurement data, sync records remotely, and integrate results into their CMMS without relying on manual data entry or paper logs.

Q: Where is the EPA-4100 manufactured, and what is the current timeline for availability?

Lucio Simoni: The EPA-4100 is engineered and manufactured at our facility in St. Charles, Missouri.

Regarding availability, the EPA-4100 is currently pending FDA 510(k) review and is not available for sale or commercial delivery in the United States. We will announce formal commercial availability, pricing, and delivery schedules once final regulatory clearance is obtained.
