Stryker - Hermes Ready Pump
by Stryker

The open system architecture of the HERMES Control Center allows Computer Motion to incorporate many other surgical devices that our customers have grown to prefer over their many years of building supply relationships. HERMES alliance partnerships have been developed with world-class medical device manufacturers including Berchtold, ConMed, STERIS, Stryker, SKYTRON and Tyco-Valletlab. These partnerships provide choices for our customers and deliver maximum flexability and quality in peripheral devices.

Speech Recognition - There are two types of speech recognition systems - those for dictation and those for voice control. The primary differences between the two are the size of the vocabulary and the speech recognition accuracy. Dictation systems commonly incorporate thousands of words in their vocabulary; however, the speech recognition accuracy is not acceptable for the OR environment. Conversly, systems such as HERMES Control Center utilize a finite vocabulary resulting in extremely high speech recognition accuracy. In addition, HERMES speech technology has one- time pronunciation training session so the recognizer can learn the characteristics of each surgeon's voice. The HERMES platform was developed specifically for the challenging operating room environment where safety, accuracy and dependability are mission critical.
Advances in endoscopic surgery have reduced procedural efficiency by adding numerous ancilliary devices which must be constantly monitored and adjusted. The HERMES network was designed to optimize the efficiency of the OR team in these complex situations. Speech recognition provides the most natural interface to deliver direct control of these devices to the surgeon, thereby increasing the efficiency of the OR team. The HERMES speech engine is designed to recognize the specific surgeon's voice model- and only the words in its vocabulary. This allows the surgeon to naturally interact with the OR staff without inadvertently activating peripheral devices.
Video Feedback - Because the endoscopic surgeon's focus is on the video monitor, the HERMES Control Center provides a graphic display of peripheral device information. This overlay provides both navigation of system capabilities and device status in an easy-to-understand universal format. The surgeon maintains focus on the procedure while still using multiple peripheral devices efficiently.
Audio Feedback - The HERMES Control Center provides audiable voice feedback to close the "voice control loop". This simple confirmation lets the OR team know that the commands were recognized and acted upon, enhancing communication and productivity by minimizing time spent investigating device status. It confirms critical functions and explains otherwise unclear device feedback.
Touch-Screen Pendant Control - In addition to voice- control, a touch- screen Pendant provides auxiliary control of all HERMES- Ready devices from a single location, in or out of the sterile field. The Pendent controller utilizes a universal user interface for all HERMES- Ready devices, which simplifies the control of non- standardized devices.
