Time /Date not changing on boot

Can i simply change the motherboard battery (CMOS battery) with out causing any major problems to see if this fixes Time issue?

i am working on esaote my lab 50 xvision ultrasound machine. there is a keyboard error blinking on screen,most of the keys not working. plaese help me to solve this problem.
