First of all, thank you for assuming that resposibility and helping to assure the safety of your patients! TE probes shoudl be tested before each use to avoid cross-contamination, chemical poisoning, and the unlikely (but possible) risk of electric shock.
That ratio is about 3 tablespoons of salt per quart of water. However, you should be able to use tap water. I have tested probes all over the USA and some other countries including France, Germany, Mexico and the UK. I have yet to find tap water that was not conductive. Ultrasound leakage testers typically have a test of the conductivity of the bath that is done just before the leakage test, which will tell you if it is conductive. Also, you may be able to test them in the disinfecting solution because those are very conductive. Remove the TE probe if it fails, though. No reason to cause even more damage to the articulation cables and the other expensive components inside the probe.
