Ventilator Inoperative

Good Day! Hoping someone can help us with our problem. We have 2 units of PB840 and they're not working anymore. Unfortunately, we don't have a BioMed. Can someone please help us how to troubleshoot the ventilator. It appears "Ventilator inoperative". What does it mean? How to fix it? Thank you!

Here's what the manual says, "In some situations, the ventilator declares a ventilator inoperative condition. A hardware failure or critical software error that could compromise safe ventilation triggers this condition. When this occurs, the ventilator inoperative indicator lights and the ventilator enters the safety valve open (SVO) state. To correct a ventilator inoperative condition, the ventilator must be turned off, then powered on again; at power on, a qualified service technician must run extended self test (EST). The ventilator must pass EST before normal ventilation can resume."

Not knowing where you're located, I would recommend calling a local hospital and talking with the Biomed department for possible service providers.  You could also call Medtronic and ask them for assistance.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for your kind reply.

Unfortunately, our ventilator failed the EST more than 3 times. It used to work after a succesful EST whenever we use it. However this time, every after EST the ventilator flashes "ventilator inoperative".

I really appreciate your help, didn't expect you'd reply.

Godbless!

Hi,

Are you using the correct test circuit? That is very important to have. I would take note of each test that failed in the EST and start there. If you can start the EST, I would say that is a good indication the communication between the GUI and BDU is ok. Has your unit been sitting for a while or in use? These have also reached the end of manufacturer support. You can still get parts from vendors like PartsSource if needed.

Hope this helps.

Hello!

Thank you for replying. We're using Hudson ventilator circuit ever since. Our Ventilators are stocked for more than a month now. We tried everything we can--EST everyday, but the same result and it also shows OVERRIDEN. If you have some ideas or advices on how to troubleshoot our ventilators, we're willing to try it.

Thank you and God bless you!

Hi Isabela,

Have you solved the PB840 problem on "ventilator inoperative"?

Doing an EST on 840 vent needs a "gold tube" without a inlet filter.  Some biomed make this mistake putting a filter on and not work.  Plus you must be trained on this vent.  Some hospital RRT run EST and some hospitals only allow biomed to do.

If you run a PVT, you need a PTS-2000 (calibration date not expired) plus two gold tubes plus a proper vent circuit and some accessory like 840vts vent software and plug...    You cannot do PVT without factory trained and equipment.  Ask Medtronic (previous Covidien) for help.

You question might be a very simple issue as I saw many times came in with this message.

Sincerely

MK
