We have an ancient machine and no user manual if any kind. How are we supposed to interpret the SQI squares in the top right corner of the screen? The 4 boxes that are either green, yellow, or red?

The SQI is the Signal Quality Indicator. As copied from the operators manual:
Level 1 (Green) Normal All aspects of the signal are optimal
Level 2 (Green) Intermediate Indicates a moderately compromised signal
Level 3 (Yellow) Poor Indicates poor signal quality
Level 4 (Red) Unacceptable Indicates severe problem with one or more aspects of signal quality.
