Take the covers off. Watch the latches as you close the lid. There are switches that need to be pushed in order for the display to clear.
It's usually those micro switches that go bad.

Hey Funnibunni,
Like Chris S said it's usually a lid sensing micro switch as going bad. I just uploaded the service manual so we'll see when that pops up. but S3 is what you are looking for listed in the service manual as "5810 853.044" though good luck finding it. You should call eppendorf.
