ERROR E31 MOTOR OVERTEMP

Hi,

Does anyone know what ERROR E31 MOTOR OVERTEMP means for the Sorvall Legend XT centrifuge.  Bad brushes? Problem with the control board or a temperature probe?  Any troubleshooting recommendations would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Equipment: Sorvall Legend XT centrifuge

The Legend XT is a brushless motor. The error 31 could be the motor bearings generating enough heat that the motor thermal is opening up. Normally that would coincide with an extreme abundance of bearing noise while the motor is turning. If you do not have bearing noise, inspect vent screens for lint/dust that tends to build up on them. If all is clean, the only thing left to inquire about is what speed is the instrument running and for how long? I look forward to assisting you further. Thanks again for using MedWrench.

Thank you for your response.

The error is present after the instrument is turned on.

The vents and area are clean, the rotor when spun is quiet and does not show any resistance to spinning.

Always remove the rotor and turn the motor shaft when checking bearings due to the fact the rotor has so much inertial mass, it will mask bearing issues when installed. If you unplug the motor assembly from your main pcb, the two white wires are the motor thermal. Ohm across them with an Ohm meter to verify the thermal hasn't permanently opened up. If it measures open from white to white, you will need to replace your motor assembly. Thanks again for using MedWrench.

Hi there, Error 31 is indicative of the output stage of the inverter failing. You will need to replace the PCB. We have attempted to repair the output stage in the past by replacing the output transistors and drive ic's with very little success.

Check:

1.- Rear separation of the centrifugte. There is a small fan on the boardto cool the motor power line.

2.-Check de white motor connector. To do is, loosen the rubber motor cover and tighten that connector with your fingers. The terminals usually fali.

These jobs must be done with the machine disconnected  from the electrical network
