Error 005 on the MF-20R is the lid-sensor fault. The little microswitch/optical sensor in the top edge of the lid is broken, so the centrifuge thinks the lid is permanently open.

Replace the lid sensor (lid-closed switch).

It’s usually just a standard micro-switch or IR optical proximity sensor — the part number varies by OEM, but most labs replace it with a generic V-153-1C25 style microswitch or a standard IR slot sensor depending on the version.

Check the actuator tab on the lid.

Sometimes the switch is fine but the plastic tab that presses it broke off.

Clear the error by power-cycling after installing the new sensor.

I'm looking at the Rev 1 March/2012 version of the manual and it states Error 005 is for "No speed signal". It says 008 is the lid switch(s) though I don't doubt it could use a new one if it's been crushed.

This version of the manual says 005 can be just about anything but the one I like is "Missing magnet on a rotating accessory" Did the magnet on the rotor come off and now the unit can't tell what speed it's going?

Does the unit even try to start and it produces the error or does the error happen as soon as it is turned on?

I'll upload the manual that I have.
